NYFA Filmmaking Alum Kushaal Chawla is an award wining director with several short films, commercials and music videos under his belt. Kushaal has also been a part of the development team for two major reality television shows: "Lip Sync Battle India" for Fox Star India (Star Plus)  and "TED Talks India” hosted by Mr. Shah Rukh Khan for Fremantle.

Now he's onto bigger ventures, developing his first feature, a biopic film titled “BEDI”, through his production company "Dream Slate Pictures". The film will tell the story on the life of Dr. Kiran Bedi, first female officer to join the Indian Police Services.

NYFA Alumni Network: Can you tell us a bit about yourself, where you're from, and what brought you to New York Film Academy?

K.C: I’m a Film Director and have been writing and directing films and advertising content all over the world. I also run a production company called “Dream Slate Pictures”. I joined NYFA after my undergraduate degree to learn and master essential filmmaking skills that would help me in my directing career.

NYFA Alumni Network: Tell us more about your directorial feature debut "Bedi"? How did the project come together?

K.C: This film is a Biopic Feature Film on the life of Dr. Kiran Bedi, the 1st woman officer to join the Indian Police Services. It is a very inspiring story that will uplift and motivate generations to come.

The project started more than four years ago when I had approached Dr. Bedi with my vision and pitched the film. After four years of extensive research, interviews and conversations, we are now close to locking the script and on Dr. Bedi’s 75th birthday announced the film to the world.

K.C: What was your experience like meeting Dr. Bedi?

I have known Dr. Bedi since I was a child and grew up watching her career. She has always inspired me and her magnificent life has shaped my personality tremendously.  Hence, this film is very close to my heart as this is a story I’ve practically seen and grown up with. The unseen/unheard parts of this story along with Dr. Bedi’s major achievements are ones that I want to showcase to the entire world through celluloid.

NYFA Alumni Network: What did you learn at NYFA that you applied directly to this project and others?

K.C: Most of my creative and technical filmmaking skills have been acquired from the conscientious professors at NYFA. As an institution NYFA had truly shaped and carved out my skills in order to make me industry ready while keeping alive and nurturing my original creative niche.

NYFA Alumni Network: When do you start production? And when can we expect to see the film?

K.C: After locking the script, we will look to finalize a studio partner for the film after which we will go into pre production and the process will follow. We are trying to release the film by the end of 2025.

Congratulations Kushaal on all your success!
