NYFA Alum, Abraham Amkpa thesis film "Lift" has been accepted in Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival in August and New Filmmakers LA May Screening series.

The film tells the story about two Nigerian weightlifters competing against each other for US Citizenship.  Abraham spoke with NYFA Alumni Network about his experience making the film.

Alumni Network: Can you tell us a bit about yourself, where you're from, and what brought you to New York Film Academy?

AA: I was born in French West Africa followed by many years growing up in England, Niger, Nigeria, until finally landing in New York City at 14 yrs old. My exposure to the performing arts began thanks to my father; he is an actor, playwright, and filmmaker. From my mother's compassion and service as a private school owner in a socioeconomically challenged Niger, I learned to appreciate human life globally and choose to tell those stories through acting and filmmaking.

Alumni Network: Tell us a little more about the project. What inspired you to write the film?

AA: 'Lift' is an immigrant story that is dear to me. It's loosely based on a true story and our lead actor, who plays Rashid, Rasaq Tanimowo, is a real world Olympic Champion who represented Nigeria and Team USA in previous Olympic trials. This film was Rasaq's first time acting and also the owner of the gym, Coach Danny, who graciously lent us his facility and his mentorship to accurately paint the story.

Alumni Network: What did you learn at NYFA that you applied to your work?

AA: All the technical aspects of filmmaking and how to apply the tools of mise en scene, screenwriting, and directing to bring my story to life.

Currently "Lift" is in the festival circuit. NYFA Alumni Network congratulates Abraham on all his success!
